One day handbuilding workshops

WHAT ARE ONE DAY WORKSHOPS?

Black Hound’s One Day Clay Workshops are a fun and easy way to experience clay for the first time! All of our workshops are taught by professional teaching artists and have easy step by step instructions designed for beginners who have never touched clay before.

If you have more experience, One Day Workshops will allow you to delve deeper into the projects and make them as unique and interesting as your heart desires.

WHO CAN ATTEND?

One Day Workshops are suitable for kids 8 years and older with an accompanying adult. If attending with a child, the adult must purchase a ticket as well to ensure that we have enough space for everyone in attendance.

Teens age 16 and over may attend One Day Workshops on their own.

WHAT IS SLIDING SCALE?

We wanted to make art experiences accessible to as wide an audience as possible, so our handbuilding workshops are all priced in 3 sliding scale tiers. No matter what tier you select, you will have the same fun workshop experience!

If you are unfamiliar with how sliding scale fees work, we ask that you take a look at this graphic to get a sense of where you fall on the scale.

WHEN DO I GET MY FINISHED PIECES?

All work is bisque fired, glazed and then fired again by Black Houndf staff. You can expect this to take about 3 to 4 weeks from the date of your workshop. You will be notified by email when your pieces are ready to pick up! We are open Wednesday through Sunday 12-6.

MAKE YOUR OWN MUG

In this workshop, you'll make a slab built functional mug perfect for your favorite beverage. Using a variety of stamps and textures, you’ll be able to personalize your mug to be as unique as you! Once you’re finished, you will select your glaze and your pieces will be glazed and fired by the studio. The fired mug will be food, microwave and dishwasher safe.

FANTASTIC PLANTERS

In this workshop, you’ll create a unique clay planter for your houseplants using slab and coil building techniques. Building this way will allow you to create interesting, funky shapes that are one of a kind! Once you’re finished, you will select your glaze and your pieces will be glazed and fired by the studio.

HANDPAINTED PASTA BOWLS (new!)

In this workshop, you'll stencil and paint your very own bowl - good for pasta, cereal, fruit or whatever else you’re making for dinner! You’ll begin by draping a slab of soft clay into a bowl form and then use newsprint to make custom stencils which you’ll use to decorate your bowl!

SEA GLASS SOAP DISH (new!)

In this workshop, you'll make a coil built soap dish for your home. You can choose from a variety of provided templates or make your own unique shaped dish! After you finish your soap dish, that’s when the magic happens: in collaboration with our friends at Remark Glass in South Philly, we will use a special multicolored mix of glass made from recycled bottles and containers to combine with Black Hound’s glazes to create beautiful, unexpected results!

MAKE YOUR OWN TILE (new!)

In this workshop, you'll make a carved, decorated tile for your home. This tile can be used as a coaster, trivet or can be a decorative wall hanging. You will begin by cutting out your tile from a clay slab and selecting a color to paint your tile. While the tile dries, you can decide how you’d like to decorate it! You can carve anything, from abstract patterns to an illustration, it’s up to you!
